Through our schools program, we provide educators with a curriculum that teaches the essential digital citizenship and literacy skills every student needs to succeed. We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, and concerned parents, caregivers, and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the YouTube Editor will research, assign, edit, and publish long-form reviews for popular/controversial YouTube channels, helping meet internal deliverables and ensuring timely, robust coverage. Other duties may include updating older reviews, creating/updating curated lists, trafficking workflow, and managing freelance writers. We are committed to hiring reviewers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA, or remote

  • Assign, edit, and publish new and existing reviews of YouTube channels for the Common Sense Media consumer platform.
  • Recruit and manage freelance reviewers, track assignment dates and deadlines, determine review ratings, and meet ambitious deadlines.
  • Evaluate reviews through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to identify and correct problematic language and decenter the White voice.
  • Update/create curated lists as assigned. 
  • Use AirTable to manage review workflow and data tracking. 
  • Use our proprietary content management system.
  • Stay on top of all YouTube/short-form video trends and major players.


  • Background in journalism/online content creation and/or media criticism.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in an editorial capacity, ideally for a parent audience.
  • Familiarity with media and pop culture trends, specifically YouTube.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Google Docs/Sheets/etc.
