The Mobile App Product Manager will oversee and manage the Common Sense Media iOS and Android apps. This role will report to the VP of Product and will work closely with the full Product team, along with various leaders across the organization, to help define and shape the overall mobile strategy.

This role will manage all aspects of the app development process, including the planning and coordination of the design and build process for releases, internal coordination and communication, and marketing of the apps in the Apple and Google Play stores. This role will be part of the Product and Engineering team, will manage third-party developers, and will work closely with our Marketing team on growth strategies.

The ideal candidate has experience managing the build, launch, and growth of mobile apps and mobile experiences that span native apps and site experiences, and understands how to optimize for user acquisition and engagement. Experience with mobile payments and app monetization strategies, including in-app purchases, is highly desired. Key characteristics of the ideal candidate include the ability to understand user needs, strategically prioritize features, build consensus among different parts of the organization, and use data to make decisions.

  • Help conceptualize, prioritize, and plan new features and functionalities for the app, based on user needs, data analysis, and organizational objectives.
  • Develop and write product specifications in concert with staff from Product, Engineering, Editorial, Marketing, Design, and other teams while representing the mobile app user's interests.
  • Create and manage all app-related engineering tickets in work sprints.
  • Coordinate work around technical integrations with technical product managers and developers as needed to fulfill requirements of the product spec.
  • Manage an external firm of developers, and help choose technologies and approaches to maximize product capabilities and adoption.
  • Oversee growth strategies, including setting and delivering on user acquisition and engagement KPIs. 
  • Maintain project timelines, interface with other stakeholders, manage product wish lists and triage board items and features.
  • Work closely with UI/Product Designers throughout the user flow, wireframe, and design phases for any new features, and with UX Strategist to plan user research tests, create and update KPIs and success metrics, report out regularly to stakeholders and others at the organization, and suggest improvements and updates based on these numbers, benchmarks, and goals.
  • Work closely with the Marketing team to execute marketing strategies that position the app for growth and align with our overall marketing strategy.
  • Oversee app analytics and analyze data regularly to help inform next steps.
  • Work closely with the customer management team to understand user issues, prioritize fixes and new feature requests, and address the most common user pain points.
  • Respond to any critical bugs and help troubleshoot if there is a major downtime or user inability to access features, working with QA and relevant developers.
  • Be the mobile user advocate and understand deeply how the iPhone or Android devices can be used to better serve our users' objectives.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in iPhone and Android, and general mobile trends, to help guide the development of the app and position it as a must-have product.


  • 4 years of product management experience with successful iPhone and/or Android apps using in-app purchases or paid services.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing product specs.
  • Technical competence in understanding technology concepts and best practices, and the ability to communicate with engineers regarding technical requirements, general API understanding, and how to write high-level technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and best practices for mobile app development.
  • Experience in launching and marketing apps within app stores.
  • Experience working in the parent and/or kid domain on applications is a big plus.
  • Ability to explain product and technical concepts around mobile app development to stakeholders in other departments.
  • Understanding of QA in helping to develop and test mobile apps, and experience working with QA engineers and/or automated tools.
  • Ability to manage up and drive consensus among stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
