OVERVIEW:

Common Sense is seeking a Director of Executive Events in the Office of the Founder and CEO. This role will lead executive-level events and appearances for the CEO, including flagship Common Sense events, designed to spark conversations, catalyze new ideas, and inform and inspire audiences. This individual will book and manage a high-profile roster of guest talent and oversee the programming and run of show of key events. They will also proactively pursue new opportunities to leverage the Founder and CEO to advance the organization's brand and mission through external engagements. 

The role includes setting strategic goals and processes for executive event opportunities, sourcing, cultivating, and managing event speakers, partnering with internal teams on event execution, and identifying and securing new and strategic speaking opportunities, all designed to advance the mission of Common Sense.

This is a new position at Common Sense. The ideal candidate is a seasoned relationship builder and event programmer, an excellent verbal and written communicator, and is able to work with many different types of stakeholders across all levels of an organization. They are also highly organized, detail-oriented, enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, and passionate about our mission. This person should have strong working knowledge of key figures in the industry, government, and public service, ideally with a strong network of contacts in the field, and an interest in keeping up with the news cycle around politics, education, and technology.

 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full- or part-time (20–40 hours per week, depending on experience)

REPORTS TO: Chief of Staff with a dotted line to the Founder and CEO; works in close partnership with Chief Strategy & Development Officer

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA preferred

Core responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and lead talent recruitment and booking for executive-level events in the Office of the Founder and CEO. 
  • Manage inbound event requests and align requests with organizational goals and opportunities.
  • Develop and execute events and speaking engagements that advance Common Sense's mission, thought leadership, and programmatic and advocacy goals, in partnership with relevant cross-functional teams: 
    • Craft the overall vision and objectives for events, in collaboration with the Founder and CEO.
    • Manage the sourcing, booking, communications, and management of talent; oversee key relationships.
    • Develop event program and run of show, format, and flow with CEO and talent.
  • Research and identify thought leaders in Common Sense’s core programmatic or advocacy issue areas as potential event partners and speakers.
  • Work with Marketing, Communications, Advocacy and/or Development teams to promote speaking or event opportunities with relevant external stakeholders and partners.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to leverage the Founder and CEO to advance the organization's brand and mission through external engagements, e.g., at conferences, podcasts, and other speaking engagements.

EXPERIENCE: 

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of events, marketing, and/or communications experience, with experience booking and managing talent.
  • Skilled and seasoned in relationship-building and management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator. 
  • Experience working with executive-level or high-profile stakeholders; existing network of high-profile contacts preferred. 
  • Knowledge of and interest in Common Sense's core programmatic or advocacy issues is preferred.
  • Facility in interacting across multiple levels of an organization.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and fast deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in managing a complex network of sensitive and high-profile relationships is critical.
